Networking

Longford Women's Link is a founder member of NCCWN (National Collective of Community based Women's Networks). In County Longford there are eleven women's groups and fourteen ICA guilds who are members of Longford Women's Link network. If you would like to know whether there is a group close to where you live, see this list below:

  • African Women

Meet every 2nd Thursday, 11.00am. Longford Women's Link
    Contact: Funke Oyewole 043 47414

We meet to support each other and to have one voice. We would like to be able to influence policies in County Longford and in the Republic of Ireland. We undertake training and education to help us prepare for work and to integrate. We have activities that reflect African heritage and we promote sisterhood to help each other in time of need.

  • Ballinalee

Every 2nd Wednesday 8.30pm, Currycahill Hall, Ballinalee
    Contact: Fiona McVitty 043 23283

We are a new group, formed because so many new people have moved into the area that we feel the need to include them in our community. Women who work part-time and who are caring at home need a social outlet. That is what we aim to provide, a way for women to meet, to share experiences and to learn something. We're a get-up-and-go group and had great fun organizing a fundraiser for People in Need for which we made loads of money.

  • Ballymahon

    Every Thursday 8.00pm.Community Centre, Ballymahon
    Contact: Liz McLoughlin 09064 38959

We are a large group who faithfully meet every week. In the Summer we organize some nice walks and garden visits. We may be changing our meeting place since it is difficult to spread tapestry and quilt material in the space available to us. Some members are interested in learning bridge. We visit other women's groups, so there is always something going on to interest everybody.

  • Dromard

    Mondays 8.30pm, Community Hall, Dromard
    Contact Sheila Duffy 049 - 433 5216

We have our own room in the community centre where we try our hand at pottery, glass painting, decoupage and other such interests. In the summer months we like to pursue outdoor hobbies such as pitch n putt, or bowling.

  • Hilltop

Every 2nd Monday, 8.30pm. Dolans Pub and Lounge, Aughnacliffe.
    Contact ; Margot Campbell 043 - 84107

The group covers a large rural area so it is nice to get together. Our group likes dancing, we have good craic at the set and line dancing. We get stuck into more in-depth subjects such as a communications course, a pre enterprise course for women considering self employment. We like to keep abreast of community activities and occasionally fundraise for local need.

  • Mullinalaghta Women's Group

Every 2nd Thursday 8.30 Community Hall, Mullinalaghta
    Contact : Josephine McGovern 043 86741 or 086 648 56

We are known as "The Mullies". Because we live in a rural area, women can be quite isolated. We formed a group at the end of 2001 to give women a place to get together, to give newcomers to the area a way to meet other women and in this way to build community relations. When we meet on Thursdays we learn and share information, we chat about our children's health, how our composting bins are working, we make plans for an outing, for a guest speaker. We organised a Personal Development course in the mornings, and a Book-Keeping and Taxation Course for farmers and households in the community. We always have something interesting on the go, and we're especially keen on cooking!

Mother and Toddler Group meet on Saturday mornings 10.00-12.00.am.in the Community Hall, Mullinalaghta. Children bring toys and share them, mothers exchange information and occasionally we have an informal session with a guest speaker on subjects such as child development and play.
